PCOS and Trying to Conceive in Hyderabad
PCOS often makes ovulation irregular, so pregnancy can take longer even when the fallopian tubes and sperm are normal. Many women in Hyderabad start with cycle tracking and ovulation treatment, not IVF. The right first step depends on age, how long you have been trying, and whether other factors are present. Dr. Sravya Buggana assesses this at Alkapur Township, Hyderabad.
How PCOS affects getting pregnant
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormone pattern. The fertility problem is usually that an egg is not released every month. Cycles may be long, unpredictable, or absent. Ovaries can look polycystic on ultrasound, but the ultrasound alone does not diagnose PCOS and does not decide the treatment.
PCOS does not block the fallopian tubes by itself. A semen analysis and, when the history suggests it, a check of the tubes are still part of a couple assessment. Treating only the PCOS label can miss a second cause.
What is often tried first
- A clear record of cycle length, weight change, and any medicines already used.
- Blood tests for the pattern of PCOS, thyroid function, and prolactin when the history calls for them.
- Ovulation treatment when the goal is a regular egg release and the tubes and sperm are suitable.
- IUI if ovulation treatment alone is not the best fit, or after it has been tried without pregnancy.
IVF is considered when simpler ovulation care is unsafe, has not worked, or another factor such as blocked tubes or a severe semen problem is present. It is not the automatic starting point for PCOS.
What to bring to the visit
Bring old ultrasound reports, hormone results, and a note of your longest and shortest cycles. Say which ovulation tablets or injections you have already used and how you responded. That history stops the clinic from repeating a plan that already failed.
Care for PCOS and PCOD is individual. Some women ovulate with a low-dose plan. Others develop many follicles and need the dose changed or the cycle stopped. A higher dose is not a better dose.

Common questions
Does every woman with PCOS need IVF?
No. Many start with ovulation treatment when the tubes are open and the semen analysis is suitable.
Can I conceive with irregular periods from PCOS?
Yes, but ovulation is less predictable. Treatment is aimed at releasing an egg in a monitored cycle, not at guessing dates.
Is a polycystic ovary ultrasound enough to diagnose PCOS?
No. Diagnosis uses the cycle history and hormone pattern as well as the scan. The scan alone does not choose IVF or tablets.
