Questions for Your First IVF Consultation in Hyderabad

Published · Updated · Hyderabad · Dr. Sravya Buggana

A couple at a first fertility consultation with a doctor

At a first IVF consultation, ask which tests are still needed, whether IVF is the right next step or whether IUI or ovulation care fits better, what a cycle asks of your schedule, which risks apply to you, and how embryos are frozen if transfer is delayed. Bring previous reports, a medicine list, and your partner if a semen test is still pending. Dr. Sravya Buggana sees couples for this visit in Alkapur Township, Hyderabad.

What to bring

  • Cycle dates for the last three months, or a note if cycles are irregular.
  • Prior pregnancy and miscarriage details.
  • Surgery and infection history, including appendix, ectopic pregnancy, fibroids, or endometriosis.
  • Blood tests, ultrasound reports, tubal tests, and any AMH or FSH result.
  • The full semen analysis, not a summary on a phone note.
  • A list of medicines and supplements, including thyroid and prolactin treatment.

If reports are from another hospital in Hyderabad, carry the original PDFs or printouts. Names of medicines matter more than brand photos.

Questions about the plan

  1. Which result, if any, is still missing before a treatment is chosen?
  2. Is IVF the next step, or is IUI or ovulation induction still reasonable?
  3. Does the plan use ICSI, and why?
  4. Is embryo genetic testing relevant in our case, or not?
  5. If we have had a failed cycle elsewhere, what would be done differently? See recurrent IVF failure.

Questions about the cycle itself

Ask how many clinic visits a stimulation cycle usually needs, which days those visits fall on, and what a cancelled cycle means. A cycle can be stopped before egg retrieval if the response is unsafe or too poor to continue. Ask what happens to embryos that are not transferred, and whether a frozen transfer is the expected plan. Ask which medicines are injections and which are tablets, and who teaches you to take them.

Also ask what the plan does not include. A clear “we are not doing this yet” is as useful as a list of procedures.

Questions about safety

  • What symptoms mean I should call the clinic the same day?
  • How is ovarian hyperstimulation watched for in my protocol?
  • Which of my existing conditions, such as thyroid disease, diabetes, or a uterine problem, change the protocol?
  • What follow-up happens if this cycle does not lead to a transfer?

The first visit should end with a written or clearly repeated list of tests and a time frame. You should not leave unsure whether IVF has been chosen.

Common questions

Do both partners need to attend the first IVF visit?

Yes, whenever possible. A semen test and the male history are part of deciding whether IVF or ICSI is needed.

Will IVF start on the day of the first consultation?

Usually no. Missing tests are completed first, and stimulation is timed to a cycle once the plan is agreed.

Which reports should I carry in Hyderabad?

Carry tubal tests, ultrasound, hormone results including AMH if you have it, previous treatment summaries, and the full semen analysis.
