What a Low AMH Result Means in Hyderabad
AMH is a blood test that estimates how many eggs may still be available. A low result does not mean pregnancy is impossible, and it does not measure egg quality on its own. Doctors read it with your age, an ultrasound count of follicles, and the range used by that laboratory. Dr. Sravya Buggana reviews low AMH reports at her clinic in Alkapur Township, Hyderabad.
What the test is actually measuring
Anti-Müllerian hormone is released by small follicles in the ovary. A higher number usually means more of those follicles. A lower number usually means fewer. The result is one part of ovarian reserve. It does not count the eggs you will use this month, and it does not grade the quality of those eggs.
Age still carries more weight for egg quality than a single AMH value. A woman of 28 with a low AMH is not in the same position as a woman of 40 with the same number.
Why one number is not a diagnosis
- Laboratories do not all use the same units or the same reference range. Compare the unit on your report before comparing numbers with someone else.
- The test can be repeated if the result does not match the ultrasound.
- An antral follicle count on scan is read with the AMH, not instead of the history.
- Vitamin D, recent ovarian surgery, and some medicines can change the picture. Mention them at the visit.
A low result is a reason to avoid long delays. It is not a reason to start IVF on the day the report arrives, before tubes, sperm, and the uterus have been considered.
How treatment is chosen
Low AMH care may still begin with ovulation treatment or IUI when age and the other tests allow it. IVF is discussed when the reserve is low enough that repeated simpler cycles would waste time, or when another factor already points to IVF. The stimulation dose is judged from the AMH and the follicle count so the response is watched closely. A low AMH does not guarantee a poor response, and a normal AMH does not guarantee many eggs.

Common questions
Does a low AMH mean I cannot get pregnant?
No. It suggests fewer eggs may be available. Pregnancy still depends on age, ovulation, tubes, sperm, and the uterus.
Should IVF start as soon as AMH is low?
Not automatically. The semen analysis, tubes, and age decide whether a simpler step is still reasonable.
Can I compare my AMH number with a friend's result?
Only if both reports use the same unit and you know each lab range. A number without the unit is easy to misread.
