What an IVF Cycle Involves in Hyderabad

An IVF cycle has four stages: tests and a start plan, ovarian stimulation with monitoring, egg retrieval with fertilisation in the laboratory, and embryo transfer either in that cycle or later from frozen embryos. Stimulation often needs about 8 to 14 days of visits. Not every cycle reaches egg retrieval or transfer. Dr. Sravya Buggana explains the plan for your case in Hyderabad before medicines begin.

Before medicines start

IVF is planned only after the reason for treatment is clear. That usually includes a semen analysis, an ultrasound, and enough information about the tubes and uterus. Consent, infection screening, and a review of medicines happen before the first stimulation injection. If those steps are unfinished, the cycle waits. The first consultation is not the day eggs are collected.

Stimulation and monitoring

Injections help several follicles grow. You attend for ultrasound and sometimes blood tests every few days. The dose can change. A cycle is cancelled before retrieval if the response is too low to be useful or too high to be safe. Cancellation is a safety decision, not a failed operation.

When follicles are ready, a trigger injection times egg maturation. Egg retrieval is a short procedure, usually under sedation, about 34 to 36 hours later. You should not drive yourself home.

The laboratory and the transfer

Eggs are fertilised the same day, either by mixing with sperm or by ICSI when sperm parameters require it. Embryos are watched for several days. Transfer may be in the same cycle or in a later cycle after freezing. Freezing is chosen when the lining, hormone levels, or the risk of over-response make a fresh transfer unwise.

Embryo genetic testing is an extra step for selected couples. It is not part of every IVF cycle. A negative pregnancy test after transfer is reviewed before another cycle is booked. Repeating the same plan without asking what changed is how time is lost. See recurrent IVF failure if you have already had more than one unsuccessful cycle.

What you should expect to be told

  • How many monitoring visits are likely in your protocol.
  • Which symptoms mean you should call the same day.
  • Whether a frozen transfer is the expected plan.
  • What happens to embryos that are not transferred.

Common questions

How long does one IVF cycle take?

Stimulation monitoring is often about 8 to 14 days, followed by egg retrieval. Embryo transfer may be a few days later or in a separate frozen cycle.

Does every IVF cycle include embryo transfer?

No. A cycle can be stopped before retrieval, and embryos may be frozen instead of transferred in the same month.

Is ICSI done in every IVF cycle?

No. ICSI is used when sperm count or motility is significantly reduced, or when earlier fertilisation in the lab was poor.
